Genesis 1:1, Foundation of Scripture?
By Tommy Lohman - Sep 26, 2006
The first five words of the Bible, “In the beginning God created” stand as the foundation for all of the Bible. It’s foundation rests in the proclamation of an infinite Creator, God. If we do not start with a clear understanding of who God is and the authority He carries, then everything else that follows melts into speculation and personal opinion.
We all know that pain and suffering is present in this world, but these things are not present because God brought them in as a part of creation. They are here because there is a force of evil at work. We must not lose site of the fact that God still carries all authority. The forces of evil at work in the world today extend as far as they can, but they are only extending as far as He allows them.
“In the beginning God created” speaks with authority about God and His nature, but one fact may get missed here. This is an infinite God telling His finite creation that He exists and that He has authority. The Bible is God’s revelation to us all.
With all that is in you, try to wrap your mind around an infinite Creator who deliberatly choose to create everything we know by simply speaking. You can’t, we must rely on God to reveal Himself to us in the manner and time He chooses.
Over the past few years, I have heard people ask “Where did God come from?” or “Who created God?” Interesting questions, but both are born out of worldly thinking and teaching. In the garden of Eden, the serpent tempted Eve with an enticing propsition, if you eat the forbidden fruit “you will be like God.” At the heart of the creation/evolution debate is not scientific interpretation of evidence, but who is and who can become god.
When Satan was cast out of Heaven, what was going through his mind that would cause him to rebel. I think Satan, a finite, created being, was seeking to become something more than who he was (pride). What does evolution teach us? That we (and everything around us) have become something without God.
The “Big Bang” theory tells us that “something” exploded 15 billion years ago and organized itself without supernatural help. About 4 billion years ago the earth formed again without supernatural help and then life some how has organized itself and evolved.
I hope you see man’s faulty thinking here and why understanding these first five words of the Bible are so critical. Do you trust the Bible and accept God as authority over all or do you reject who He is and live life as you choose?
